Facts about when the Polish refugees land in New Zealand
1. in 1994 733 children were shipped to NZ to get away from war-torn Europe.
2. some children died on the way to NZ due to weakness.
3. A camp for the children called Little Poland was made near Pahīatua in Wairarapa.
4. after the war most of the refugees chose to stay in NZ after the war was over
5. around 1.7 million children and adults from Poland were placed in labor camps in Siberia.
6. while almost all of the past soldiers joined free Polish forces fighting on the Allied side.

Death of Poet James K Baxter
James K Baxter was a famous NZ Poet that died in Auckland age 46.
James worked with alcoholics and drug addicts. His body was escorted by his family back to Jerusalem. Hundreds of mourners attended a full Māori tangihanga.

Peter Snell wins second gold in Tokyo
In the eight days leading up to the Olympic 1500-m final Snell had already run five races, the heats, semi-final and final of the 800 m – he won gold in that one – and the heats and semi-final of the 1500 m. Joining him in the 1500-m final was Kiwi teammate John Davies, who just made it through his semi-final, placing third.
Snell’s time of 3 minutes 38.1 seconds was 2.5 seconds outside the world record held by the previous Olympic champion, Herb Elliott.

Chief Justice declares treaty 'worthless' and a simple nullity
Today in history October 17th 1877:
The Wi Parata case involved some land at Porirua, which Ngāti Toa had given to the Anglican church on the understanding a school would be built on it. Even Though no school was ever built.
Prendergast decided that the courts lacked the ability to consider claims based on aboriginal or native title. The Treaty of Waitangi was apperently worthless because it had been signed ‘between a nation and a group of savages.

Jean Battens epic solo flight
Jean Batten left for her flight from Kent, England 1936. her plan was to fly from England to NZ in one solo flight.

Before taking off from Richmond Aerodrome, Sydney, at approximately 6.30 a.m. (New Zealand time) on 16 October, she declared that no one should look for her if she went down at sea. she arrived at Auckland’s Mangere Aerodrome at about 5 p.m., 10½ hours after leaving Sydney, and was greeted by a crowd of 6000.
